Words of wisdom for future transfer students:

Dear Future Transfer Students,
Congratulations on embarking upon a new chapter of your academic journey! As you transition to a new institution, I want to share some words of wisdom to help you navigate this exciting and transformative experience.

1. Embrace Change: Transferring to a new school can be both exhilarating and challenging. Embrace the change with an open mind and a willingness to adapt. Embracing change allows you to grow and discover new opportunities that lie ahead.

2. Seek Support: Don't hesitate to seek support when needed. Reach out to advisors, professors, and fellow students who can offer guidance and assistance. Building a support network will help you navigate the transition smoothly and enhance your overall college experience.

3. Stay Organized: As a transfer student, you may have to navigate different systems, requirements, and deadlines. Stay organized by keeping track of important dates, assignments, and resources. Develop good time management skills to balance your academic and personal life effectively.

4. Be Proactive: Take initiative and be proactive in your academic and extracurricular pursuits. Join clubs, organizations, or student associations that align with your interests and goals. Actively participate in class discussions and engage with your professors. The more proactive you are, the richer your college experience will be.

5. Embrace Opportunities: Take advantage of the diverse opportunities available to you at your new institution. Attend workshops, conferences, and guest lectures. Engage in research, internships, or study abroad programs. These experiences will broaden your horizons, deepen your knowledge, and help you develop valuable skills.

6. Network and Connect: Build meaningful connections with your peers, professors, and professionals in your field of interest. Networking can open doors to internships, job opportunities, and collaborations. Attend career fairs and alumni events to expand your network and learn from others' experiences.

7. Maintain Balance: While academics are important, don't forget to take care of your overall well-being. Find a healthy balance between your studies, social life, and personal time. Prioritize self-care, get involved in activities you enjoy, and create a support system to manage stress effectively.

8. Embrace Diversity: One of the beauties of transferring to a new institution is the exposure to a diverse community of students from various backgrounds and cultures. Embrace this diversity and foster a sense of inclusivity and respect for others. Engage in conversations that challenge your perspectives and foster a broader understanding of the world.

9. Learn from Setbacks: Transitions can sometimes be accompanied by setbacks or challenges. View these setbacks as opportunities for growth and learning. Don't be discouraged by obstacles; instead, learn from them, adapt, and persevere. Your resilience and ability to overcome challenges will shape your character and future success.

10. Enjoy the Journey: Finally, remember to enjoy the journey. College is a time of self-discovery, personal growth, and new experiences. Make the most of this time by immersing yourself in the opportunities that come your way. Cherish the friendships you form, the knowledge you gain, and the memories you create along the way.

Wishing you all the best in your transfer journey. May it be filled with growth, learning, and remarkable achievements!

Sincerely,
[Juztine Evangelista]

Rebekah Garza

Transfer School:

Sul-Ross State University

Transfer Major:

Education with English certification (7-12 grade)

What term/year did you transfer?

I finished my Associates of arts in December of 2013

Have you completed your undergraduate degree, if so, have you pursued a graduate degree?

Completed my Bachelors of Arts in December of 2015 and I'm 12 hours away from my Master's (I really need to finish already lol)

What kinds of activities and/or programs did you participate in at Southwest Texas Junior College?

I was in Mariachi during my time at SWTJC, and was a work study at the Library and one semester in the Registrar's office.

What activities and/or program did you participate in at the university?

None. Sul-Ross didn't offer much as far as club's or student life involvement on the Uvalde campus where I attended. At the time, Uvalde campus was made up of majority non-traditional students and I found myself in the minority at 20 years old. (idk if this has changed much) I tried to join the "Shakespeare club" which was targeted at English major students like myself during my second semester, but it was only offered on the EP campus and I wasn't willing to commute just to attend club activities.

Words of wisdom for future transfer students:

Keep going. I know they say there is no age limit on education, and I believe in this whole heartedly. You truly are never "too old" to go back to school. But I will say this. It is harder. Now is the time, while you have the momentum. And if you do have to take a break, only go back when YOU are ready. Don't let anyone coerce you into it. Because if you are not committed mentally and emotionally, you will set yourself up to fail. You have to want it 100%, and that's the only way to ensure success. Best of luck!

Career and future goals:

I'm currently working as a Librarian at SWTJC, but my future goal is finishing my Master's in Librarianship for Academic Libraries and later obtaining a second Master's in English. As an Academic Librarian, it is good to have a content focus area (much like in my education degree) so I would like to be able to have that as well in order to be able to work at any university library in the state of Texas.
